The TenderFoot Fire that started near Yarnell on Wednesday spread rapidly, causing mandatory evacuations of nearly 300 people.
Almost exactly three years from time of the Yarnell fire that killed the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots, this fire brought back instant memories of that tragic event.
According to photographer Charles Mabry, who was on scene in Yarnell on Wednesday, community members seemed devastated that it was happening again.
“I saw a lady crying in her car and asked her family if they lived in Yarnell, they didn’t. It was just that type of emotion,” Mabry said.
The residents seemed confused and even frustrated at times, some would be allowed to go back into town, others weren’t, for reasons that were unclear. However, there wasn’t a lot of chaos, according to Mabry, the scene was definitely under control.
Fire suppression efforts included helicopters with buckets as well as slurry bombers. Some of the smaller planes flew out of Prescott, others from around the state.

As night time approached, the fire continued to burn, easily visible from the distance.
